Summary
The DS port of Puyo Pop Fever turns the classic 6‑by‑12 puyo puzzle into a party‑ready showdown. While the basic drop‑and‑match rules stay intact, the game shines with its Fever mode—fill a flashing bar by chaining pops, then watch a pre‑built combo rain down, letting you trigger massive attacks in a tight time window. Trash puyos drift in from opponents, hiding in a bar overhead until a chain clears them, adding a strategic tug‑of‑war element that’s easy to pick up but deep to master.
What really sets the handheld version apart is its multiplayer capacity: up to eight players can battle locally, each choosing any of the quirky cast. Atlus handled the North American release, and reviewers responded positively, rewarding it with a 74% average and a Metacritic 76/100. For anyone who loves fast‑paced puzzle face‑offs, the DS iteration keeps the core thrills while cranking the chaos up a notch.
Storyline
Puyo Pop Fever’s story mode is split into three courses that follow the adventures of Amitie, a spunky student at the Primp Magic School. She is taught by Ms. Accord to cast spells with Puyo, and the teacher announces that her Flying Cane – a wand‑like artifact – has gone missing and that a reward awaits the finder. The player controls Amitie as she travels across the Puyo Pop Fever world, meeting a cast of wacky characters and battling them along the way.
A harder version of the mode lets you play as Amitie’s rival, Raffine (also called Raffina). Choosing Raffine changes the lineup of opponents and determines which character ultimately retrieves the cane. Near the end, Raffine discovers that Accord never actually lost the Flying Cane. She attempts to expose Accord’s and Popoi’s secret, but Accord knocks her unconscious, erasing her memory of the incident.
Raffine awakens near the school, where Amitie and her friends greet her, bringing the quirky tale to a close.
