Summary
In the curious village of St. Mystère, every conversation feels like a riddle and every door hides a sliding puzzle, all pointing toward the legendary Golden Apple left behind by a late baron. As Professor Layton and his eager apprentice Luke, I wander through the village’s segmented districts, tapping characters and objects to uncover hidden brainteasers that range from logic grids to classic picture puzzles.
Each challenge displays its value in picarats and offers three hints that cost a limited hint‑coin; I start with ten and must hunt suspicious objects to replenish them. Solving a puzzle adds its picarats to my total and sometimes rewards a gizmo, a piece of furniture, or a portrait fragment, all of which can be arranged later in the professor’s trunk for separate minigames. The gizmos even let me build a robotic dog that sniffs out secret coins and puzzles.
Beyond the main 120 puzzles, the game unlocks bonus riddles via Nintendo Wi‑Fi Connection—over 25 extra challenges released weekly before the service shut down in 2014—and a hidden door that reveals concept art when the correct code from the sequel is entered. The whole experience is wrapped in animated cutscenes by P.A. Works, and the puzzle design owes a debt to Akira Tago’s Head Gymnastics books, with Level‑5’s Akihiro Hino steering the project from his childhood love of those very puzzles.
Storyline
When Baron Augustus Reinhold dies, his will promises a hidden treasure called the Golden Apple to anyone who can solve its mystery. Lady Dahlia, his widow, summons the famed puzzle‑solver Professor Hershel Layton and his self‑styled apprentice Luke Triton to the quirky village of St. Mystere. The pair arrive by car, ready to tackle the riddles that the baron left behind.
St. Mystere is a town where everyone loves brainteasers, and a strange, towering structure looms over the streets. Shortly after their arrival, a loud explosion signals the murder of Simon, a member of the Reinhold family, and Inspector Chelmey begins an investigation that initially points at Layton and Luke. Clues such as a small gearwheel found near Simon’s body and a second one after a bizarre kidnapping of the servant Ramon deepen the mystery.
Chasing a strange man who tries to use a Ferris wheel as a weapon, Layton discovers a key shaped like the tower and confronts an impostor Chelmey, who reveals himself as Don Paolo, Layton’s self‑proclaimed arch‑enemy. Paolo is after the Golden Apple for his own purposes, but he escapes before he can be captured. With the help of Bruno, the man who kidnapped Ramon, Layton learns that the entire village is made of robots created by the Baron and Bruno to guard the treasure.
The ultimate secret is that the “Golden Apple” is actually Flora Reinhold, the Baron's only daughter, who has been protected by the robots. After a dramatic tower collapse caused by Paolo’s flying machine, Flora decides to leave the hidden gold untouched, honoring the robots’ service. The story ends with Layton, Luke, and Flora departing St. Mystere, the villagers continuing their lives, and a “to be continued” hint toward the next adventure.
