Summary
Nicktoons Unite! (known as SpongeBob Square Pants and Friends: Unite! in PAL regions) finally brings together a true squad of Nickelodeon icons. On the DS you jump between SpongeBob, Timmy Turner, Jimmy Neutron and Danny Phantom, swapping characters instantly with the touch‑screen so you can solve the quirky puzzles each cartoon world throws at you. The game also sneaks in debut appearances for Danny Phantom and Rugrats All Grown Up, while still letting you crash the Rocket Power crew’s beach‑side antics. Gameplay is pure 3D platforming, letting each hero’s unique abilities open up secret paths and hidden items across the vibrant, crossover stages. Critics were split—IGN gave it a middling 5/10, GameZone edged higher at 6.8, and the aggregate landed around 53/100—but I still love how the handheld captures that nostalgic chaos of cart‑on mash‑ups.
Storyline
Nicktoons Unite! kicks off when SpongeBob discovers Plankton using massive vacuum machines to seize Bikini Bottom. A portal opens behind his house, releasing Goddard with a message from Jimmy Neutron. Following the robot, SpongeBob meets Jimmy, Timmy Turner and Danny Phantom in Jimmy’s lab, where Jimmy explains that his Universe Portal Machine has been copied by Professor Calamitous, who has formed a Syndicate with Plankton, Vlad Plasmius and Denzel Crocker to steal energy from their worlds.
The heroes’ first teleport lands them in Vlad’s castle, where a ghost portal is draining the Ghost Zone and has captured Danny’s parents. After befriending the Box Ghost and destroying the portal’s generators, they escape, then travel underwater using Jimmy’s air gum. Sandy sends them to Jellyfish Fields, they free Patrick from a harvester, board the Flying Dutchman’s ship, and battle Plankton piloting a giant robotic crab while learning the villains are powering a Doomsday Machine.
In Dimmsdale they shut down Crocker’s golden fortress, then free Fairy World’s sprites and defeat Crocker in an exosuit. Back at Jimmy’s lab they discover a flea‑bot inside Goddard, shrink down to destroy it, locate Calamitous’ lair, and finally defeat the Syndicate. SpongeBob unplugs the Doomsday Machine, Calamitous is imprisoned, and Jimmy hands each hero a Neutron Recaller for future emergencies.
