Summary

Need for Speed: Underground 2 on the DS turns the handheld into a two‑screen street racer. The top display shows the high‑speed action while the bottom screen constantly maps the circuit, letting me keep an eye on upcoming turns. By tapping the touch panel I can trigger nitrous bursts, and the same stylus lets me draw my own vinyls directly onto any car – a feature that wasn't possible on previous consoles.

Customization is extreme; every visual element – spoilers, hoods, rims, neon underglow – can be swapped, and the decal editor uses the stylus to layer graphics. Performance tweaks are tuned via a dyno that shows torque curves; nitrous refill is earned by chaining drifts, near‑misses and stunts, filling a style meter twice. The roster includes 15 licensed rides, from Japanese tuners to the newly added SUVs like the Hummer H2, each fully tunable.

The DS version adds the open‑world Bayview, based on San Francisco and Los Angeles, where races are discovered by driving to hidden locations rather than selecting them from a menu. Up to four players can race wirelessly, turning garage sessions into instant street battles. Critics praised the hip‑hop soundtrack, deep car‑culture vibe and massive customization, making Underground 2 a standout portable racer.

Storyline

Need for Speed: Underground 2 (DS) picks up right after the events of the first Underground. After beating Eddie’s Eastsiders in Olympic City with a blue Nissan Skyline GT‑R, the player receives a mysterious invitation and is soon ambushed by a Hummer that wrecks the Skyline. Six months later a plane carries the racer to Bayview, where a note from Samantha and a key marked ‘Rachel’ lead to a Nissan 350Z left by Rachel Teller at the airport. Rachel becomes the new contact, explaining the city’s sponsorship system and the Underground Racing League. As the player climbs the ranks, rival Caleb Reece and his crew the Wraiths try to control the scene, even using the Hummer driver who destroyed the Skyline.

With help from Rachel and former Wraith member Nikki Morris, the racer defeats Caleb in a final showdown, cementing their status as Bayview’s top underground driver.
