Summary

Lunar Knights (often called Boktai DS in the West) lets you juggle two very different heroes on a single DS screen. Lucian is a dark‑sided vampire hunter who can fuse with his terrennial Nero to enter a trance and temporarily become a vampire, draining life from foes. Aaron, by contrast, is a light‑wielding sharpshooter who partners with the sunny terrennial Toasty to become an avatar of the sun and blast undead enemies with solar guns.

The game’s core mechanic is the paraSOL weather system, a built‑in sensor that lets you switch between five climates—subtropical, rainforest, continental, desert and arctic—by visiting Sheridan’s Mansion. Changing the climate unlocks hidden rooms, drops rare items and even alters the elemental affinity of your terrennials. Besides Nero and Toasty, you can recruit Ursula (flame), Tove (earth), Alexander (cloud) and Ezra (frost), each granting a unique burst attack that reshapes the weather and adds elemental damage to your weapons.

A clever nod to the original Boktai titles is the W‑Gate slot: inserting a GBA Boktai cartridge feeds real‑world sunlight into the DS sensor, boosting energy, life or trance depending on the game used. Blowing into the microphone makes your character whistle, drawing enemy attention and triggering special terrennial techniques when they glow.

Boss battles culminate in a three‑stage Rocket minigame where you launch the defeated vampire into space with the Casket Rocket Laplace, followed by a short purification cutscene. The Japanese version even hides a Mega Man Star Force crossover—defeating Ox Fire unlocks the seventh terrennial War Rock. Critics praised the blend of action‑RPG depth and DS‑specific tricks, earning Lunar Knights generally favorable reviews.

Storyline

Lunar Knights opens with two men discussing a vampire that can command flame, a conversation overheard by Lucian, the Lunar Knight. Determined to locate the Duke, leader of the Dark Tribe vampires, Lucian heads to a mansion where he meets Bea, a solar gunslinger trying to free prisoners. After refusing to aid her, Lucian defeats the vampire, purifies it, and gains the flame Terrenial Ursula, learning he must collect three more main Terrenials to reach the Duke.

Meanwhile, Aaron, the Solar Knight, is sent to warn the guild as it comes under attack. He rescues a girl from undead, obtains the Solar Terrenial Toasty, and later battles the Goat Chimera with help from Bea, Ernest and Kay. The group discovers the vampires are hiding in the sewers and eventually board a train where they defeat the Poes, securing the Wind and Earth Terrenials Alexander and Tove.

The duo infiltrates the Dark Castle, where the mysterious immortal Polidori reveals himself as a space emissary. After navigating purification levels and confronting the enemy pilot Perrault, Lucian and Aaron finally face the Duke in the throne room, defeat him, and learn that the ParaSol is actually a planet‑eating weapon.

In the post‑game Vamberry tower, Lucian and Aaron battle a resurrected Polidori and learn that the Immortals may force an uneasy alliance between humans and vampires. Lucian vows never to cooperate with vampires, while Aaron remains uncertain about that promise.
