Summary

Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals landed on the Nintendo DS as an action‑RPG reimagining of the SNES classic Lufia II. The turn‑based battles are swapped for fast, real‑time combat where I directly control one hero at a time.

The game uses a rechargeable IP gauge for spells and special attacks, eliminating the old MP mechanic. Movement feels dynamic—I can jump, later earn a double‑jump, push blocks, lift objects and trigger switches to solve intricate dungeon puzzles. Only a single character appears on screen, but a wide variety of equipable weapons and armor grant unique abilities. The dual screens split the action; boss patterns and puzzle cues occupy the top while I act on the bottom, and a rewind button lets me step back a room when needed.

Character growth centers on the Mystic Stone Board (the GRID in Japan), where I place 2‑, 3‑ or 4‑square blocks to raise stats such as INT, MGC, GUT or CTR. Blocks must link to a central pointer, can be stacked up to four levels, and each party member has a dedicated board layout, rewarding careful placement.

Yusuke Naora’s redesign gives the cast a fresh look, complemented by 3D graphics and full voice acting. Critics gave the title an 80/100 Metacritic score, noting the smooth action and polished puzzles.

Storyline

Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals opens with a foreboding prologue in which Gades declares that the Sinistrals will wage war on humanity. The narrative then follows Maxim, a young monster hunter endowed with mysterious powers. His first step takes him to the Soma Shrine, where he confronts a towering mech‑golem that is revealed to be Gades, the Sinistral of Destruction.

Determined to end the chaos, Maxim sets out across the land, confronting the threats left by the Sinistrals. Along the way he is joined by his close friend Tia and gradually gathers other warriors who share his goal. Together they strive to halt the devastation wrought by the Sinistral forces.
