Summary
Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ drops you into a frantic top‑scrolling rail shooter on the DS. You can steer Little Red or her companion Momotaro left and right across seven lanes, using the stylus to aim high‑powered firearms or ninja stars. Touch the screen and the character ducks, making dodging as tactile as the gun‑fire. The game’s frantic pace ramps up with tighter corridors and swarms of undead that demand precise timing. I found the dual character options mostly cosmetic, but the fast‑paced action keeps you hooked.
The title made a splash thanks to an oddball Destructoid dress‑up contest that tossed away a signed poster and a free copy to winners in September 2008. In the U.S. it hit shelves through Destineer after Gammick Entertainment’s design push, while Europe saw a DSiWare release. Critics were split: Metacritic labeled the reviews “average,” GameSpot panned the control lag and cheap hits, yet IGN slotted it at #6 in their Top 25 DS games under $20 and even nominated it for Best Shooting Game of 2008. Nintendo Life, surprisingly, praised its depth despite a minimalist design. For a game that costs less than twenty bucks, it delivers enough chaos to merit a second try.
Storyline
Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ drops you into Storyland, a whimsical world stitched together from classic fairy tales like Pinocchio and the Three Little Pigs. The two playable heroes are a gun‑loving Little Red Riding Hood, who grew up hunting in the forest and collecting automatic firearms, and Momotarō, her peach‑born friend who boasts over a thousand adventures fighting demons and hunting treasure.
After rescuing her grandmother from yet another wolf attack, Red discovers that something has gone terribly wrong in Storyland. Together with Momotarō she battles wave after wave of invading zombie armies, traversing the fairy‑tale zones to track down the source of the plague. Their ultimate goal is to locate and destroy the mysterious force behind the undead outbreak, restoring peace to the once‑cheerful realm.
