2009 Adventure
Legend of Kay takes the classic jump‑and‑run formula and wraps it in a story‑driven adventure that feels surprisingly deep for a handheld title. The Nintendo DS version, trimmed down by Firehazard Studio and released in 2010, offers a portable slice of the original PlayStation 2 experience, though it sacrifices some of the polish that made the console version stand out. Critics were harsh on the DS port, with GameRankings aggregating a low 41 percent score and many reviewers calling the controls clunky and the visuals underwhelming. Despite the mixed reception, the game’s core appeal—tight platforming paired with a whimsical narrative—still shines through for fans who appreciate retro‑style challenges. If you’re curious about how a 2005 platformer translates to a handheld, Legend of Kay (sometimes just called “Kay”) is a quirky, if imperfect, glimpse into that era’s design ambitions.
The Legend of Kay follows the cat hero Kay, an eager martial‑arts apprentice, on the mystical island of Peng‑Lai (also called Yenching). For generations the island’s animal peoples—cats, rabbits, frogs and pandas—lived peacefully under a code known as The Way, until the gorilla emperor Shun and his rat alchemist Tak led an invasion that shattered the old order.
Outraged by the forced closure of his master’s dojo, Kay steals his master’s mystical blade and leaps over the town walls, beginning a journey across the island’s diverse regions. He traverses the secret rabbit settlement Haretree, befriends a dragon, braves swamps to reach Frog City, rides the dragon to the panda‑ruled Forbidden City, and eventually joins the Avalanche—a panda resistance group led by his former friend Su Ling.
In the volcanic stronghold Waa‑Lo, Kay defeats Tak, duels Shun and overcomes a monstrous fusion of Shun and a guard. As the volcano erupts, the Avalanche rescues him by hot‑air balloon, and the story ends with Kay revealing his master’s hat and sharing a laugh with Su Ling and the master as they sail away.
