Summary

Playing *Knights in the Nightmare* feels like piloting a bullet‑hell through a turn‑based strategy lab. The game splits into three touchscreen‑driven phases: a Setup where I allocate XP, level gear and even "Transoul" a knight, a Tactics preview that shows the enemy roster, and the real‑time battle on an isometric grid.

In combat the wisp—a little ball of light I drag with the stylus—directs attacks, collects gems to refill MP, and dodges the relentless barrage of enemy fire. The Rush Count mechanic rewards consecutive hits with odd bonuses, while the Enemy Matrix forces me to line up kills like tic‑tac‑toe, adding a puzzle‑layer to the chaos.

Permadeath is tamed by a Vitality stat for knights and a Durability stat for equipment, both replenishable through leveling, Transouling, or clever use of the Rush system. Over 200 recruitable characters appear across battles, many unlocked with items from prior encounters, and the special edition even bundles a copy of *Yggdra Union* for the GBA.

Critics praised its depth, earning scores in the high 80s from outlets like IGN and GameSpot, though they consistently flagged the hour‑long tutorial as a steep hurdle. Despite the niche appeal, the hybrid’s complexity has earned it a lasting cult reputation among retro‑strategy fans.

Storyline

The story in Knights is told both forward and in reverse, using flashbacks of the disaster at castle Aventheim to explain the present. The player controls a wisp—the disembodied soul of King Wilmgard—who recruits fallen knights to battle monsters.

Flashbacks reveal that Capehorn summoned the demon Zolgonark to exact revenge on the Knight Kingdom and the Tiamat. Capehorn, of Tiamat descent, was exiled after proposing to use the Written Law, then betrayed the king, allowing demons to claim souls. His ultimate aim is to shatter the barriers between worlds and remake the universe.

Zolgonark, seeking freedom from Capehorn, allied with Marietta, an Asgardian guardian angel. He tricked her into removing the barriers, stole her staff Ancardia, and split her soul into Maria and Melissa. Maria hunts Ancardia while fearing exile from Asgard; Melissa serves Zolgonark, whimsical yet hoping to absorb his power.

An alternate route follows Mellia, the opposite half of Marietta, who aggressively seeks to destroy Ancardia. Depending on the route, Marietta appears either as the reunited soul or as an antagonist who offers the player a betrayal choice, tying together the multiple perspectives of the Aventheim crisis.
