Summary

Godzilla Unleashed: Double Smash tries to mash 3‑D graphics with classic side‑scroll action. The DS uses its two screens cleverly: airborne monsters roam on the top screen while ground‑based foes crawl on the bottom, and a split‑screen multiplayer lets a friend take control of a rival monster. Gameplay feels more like New Super Mario Bros. or Sonic Rush than a traditional kaiju brawler, with simple punch‑and‑kick moves that quickly become repetitive. Critics were merciless—IGN gave it 3/10, calling the polygonal Godzilla a “mush of no‑texture” and condemning the “tedious series of punching planes.” GameSpot’s 2/10 verdict labelled it “one of the worst DS games ever made,” and GameSpy’s 1‑star review dismissed the combat as brain‑dead. I have to admit that even as a retro fan the sloppy design and stale levels make Double Smash a frustrating reminder of how not to translate Godzilla to handhelds.
