Summary

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective lets you wander the night as Sissel, a blue‑flame ghost who can possess objects and travel back four minutes before a death to rewrite fate. The core mechanic feels like a blend of puzzle‑solving and a live‑action stage play, with bold colors, hard shadows, and hand‑drawn animations that give the DS screen a comic‑book vibe.

The game’s creator, Shu Takumi—best known for Ace Attorney—spent six years shaping a mystery that could involve more than thirty characters in a single evening, something an alive protagonist couldn’t pull off. To keep the art lively on limited hardware, the team rasterised 3D models into 2D sprites, preserving fluid motion while saving processor power.

Its quirky characters, especially the loyal Pomeranian Missile, earned praise for deep personality, and critics highlighted the soundtrack’s jazzy flair by Ace Attorney composer Masakazu Sugimori. Although sales in Japan were modest, the title amassed a cult following, snagging awards for Best DS Game and Best Story, and continues to be cited as a hidden gem of the handheld era.

Storyline

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective opens with an amnesiac spirit named Sissel waking in a junkyard at 7:02 pm. He learns from Ray, a lamp‑possessing spirit, that dead people can use “ghost tricks” to rewind time four minutes and alter a death. Using this power Sissel saves detective Lynne from an assassination attempt and teams up with her to protect other victims.

Ten years earlier, detectives Jowd and Cabanela had arrested Yomiel, a man falsely accused of espionage. Yomiel fled, took young Lynne hostage, and was killed by a fragment of the Temsik meteorite, which grants the dead their powers. In the present, the foreign agent Sith manipulates events, kidnapping the justice minister’s daughter and framing Jowd for execution, while a mysterious “Manipulator” pulls the strings behind Alma’s death and Cabanela’s murder.

Sissel, aided by Missile the dog‑spirit, discovers his own corpse is actually Yomiel’s and that the Manipulator is Yomiel himself. By traveling back ten years they prevent Yomiel’s death, creating a new timeline where Sissel is adopted by Jowd’s family and lives as a cat spirit. Ray reveals he is an older Missile who guided Sissel to rewrite fate.
