Summary
Freedom Wings (Ore no Sentouki in Japan) surprised me with its blend of flight simulation and light RPG mechanics on the DS. The entire cockpit is controlled with the stylus – you manage speed, altitude and navigation by tapping, while targeting, firing and radar are handled on the DS buttons; there’s even an optional manual‑maneuver mode if you crave more precision. Every sortie burns fuel, so staying airborne too long forces a quick dash back to the nearest airfield for a refill, which keeps the tension high. Between missions you can hang out at the airport café to pick up new intel on pirate‑guarded targets, and the on‑screen shop lets you spend earned cash on upgrades that change depending on which base you’re docked at. The game also supports wireless multiplayer, letting friends join in for dogfights or cooperative missions, giving the title a surprisingly deep replay value for a handheld simulator.
Storyline
Freedom Wings drops you into an alternate Earth that feels like the 1940s, where the clouds are ruled by ruthless air pirates. These sky marauders have spread fear across the world, turning the heavens into a battlefield.
You assume the role of a nameless, faceless pilot whose parents were murdered by the pirates, giving you a personal vendetta. To fight back you join the Air Patrol Association, a squadron of mercenary pilots hired to clear the skies of pirate activity. The game follows your missions as you hunt down the airborne threat and reclaim the skies.
