Summary
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon felt like a fresh entry even though it’s a full‑on renewal of the original Famicom epic. The DS remake dresses Marth’s tale in polished, color‑rich sprites and adds an intuitive touch‑based menu that lets you scroll the map on the bottom screen while the top screen handles stats and cut‑scenes. For anyone who first met Marth through Super Smash Bros., the game finally gives his backstory the spotlight it deserved.
The battle system keeps the classic turn‑based, grid‑based formula, but layers on handy upgrades: colored tiles show movement and range, the Weapon Triangle rock‑paper‑scissors rule returns, and a new class‑swap mechanic lets you evolve a unit at Level 10 with a Master Seal or re‑class it within limited slots. Permanent death still adds tension, yet a mid‑battle save prevents you from restarting entire chapters. Online Wi‑Fi matches and local wireless give a multiplayer flavor the series never had before. Developed by Intelligent Systems, with music by series veteran Yuka Tsujiyoko and localization by 8‑4, the title earned praise for its balanced gameplay and sturdy multiplayer despite modest sales.
Storyline
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon retells and expands the events of Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. Set on the continent of Archanea, it follows Prince Marth of Altea, who is forced into exile by the evil sorcerer Gharnef and his dark master, the Shadow Dragon Medeus.
Centuries after the original hero Anri used Falchion and the Fire Emblem shield to defeat Medeus, the dragon is resurrected by Gharnef, who reestablishes his empire and attacks Altea. Marth escapes to Talys, and years later returns with Princess Caeda and a small band of soldiers. He seeks new alliances and the sacred Falchion and Fire Emblem shield to challenge Gharnef and Medeus.
With the help of neighboring kingdoms, Marth builds an army to reclaim his throne, defeat the Shadow Dragon, and bring peace back to Archanea.
