Summary

One year after the events of Final Fantasy XII, Vaan and his navigator Penelo soar over Ivalice’s floating continent Lemur’s, hunting treasure alongside a band of sky pirates. Their arrival awakens the aegyl, a winged race that has guarded the sky for centuries, and forces the young crew to repel invading sky pirates who have breached the hidden realm.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings plays like a miniature Warcraft on the DS: you assemble decks of up to five commander units, each paired with summoned Espers such as Shiva, Ifrit, or a chocobo. Battles unfold from a fixed overhead view, with the touchscreen handling unit placement while the D‑pad scrolls the map. A rock‑paper‑scissors affinity system—melee beats ranged, ranged beats flying, flying beats melee—adds tactical depth, and each leader can be given a single Gambit to automate abilities.

The title was co‑developed by Think & Feel and Square Enix as the debut entry of the Ivalice Alliance, directed and co‑written by Motomu Toriyama with art by Isamu Kamikokuryo and Ryoma Itō. Its design drew inspiration from Age of Empires and Warcraft, and Kenichiro Fukui composed original tracks while Hitoshi Sakimoto arranged themes from the original XII soundtrack.

Revenant Wings moved over a million units worldwide, earning praise for its crisp DS graphics and ambitious presentation. Critics highlighted the engaging RTS mechanics, though some noted the stylus controls could feel finicky and the AI occasionally erratic.

Storyline

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings follows Vaan and Penelo, now sky‑pirate captains, as they chase Balthier and Fran to the floating continent of Lemur´s. Lemur´s, a hidden landmass created by the god‑like Feolthanos, is home to the winged Aegyl, a people who lack curiosity and dreams but are bound to powerful auracite shards called auraliths. After boarding a derelict airship that transports them to Lemur´s, the duo meet Llyud, an ostracised Aegyl, and soon learn that a mysterious Judge of Wings is destroying the three auraliths to keep the continent aloft.

The party discovers the first auralith shattered, receives a vision of Balthier’s death, and later confronts the Judge who summons the esper Bahamut and damages their ship. On a nearby island they encounter Velis, who turns out to be an esper; after defeating him they learn that Mydia, the Judge of Wings, is powered by a third crystal from the Cache of Glabados. With Fran’s help they rescue Balthier, repair the airship, and press onward despite the Judge’s attacks.

Exploring an illusory realm, Vaan’s group learns that Feolthanos created Lemur´s to rebel against the Occuria and that the auraliths require the anima of the Aegyl, turning their dead into Espers. The Judge is revealed as an anima‑drained puppet of Feolthanos, harvesting souls for an unknown purpose. Allied forces from Ivalice, led by Queen Ashe and Judge Basch, join the fight.

In the final showdown the party defeats the Judge, frees Mydia’s anima, and confronts Feolthanos—now an immortal Aegyl fused with the last auralith. Destroying him and the final crystal causes Lemur´s to fall, the Espers to vanish, and the Aegyl to seek a new home with Llyud, while Vaan and Penelo part ways with their friends.
