Summary

The Nintendo DS remake of Final Fantasy III finally let western gamers explore the classic tale in full 3D. I’m blown away by how the old 512 KB Famicom cartridge spirit translates into lush models, a CGI opening, and fresh character designs by Akihiko Yoshida. The familiar turn‑based battles keep the strategic feel, while the flexible job system—starting as Onion Knights and swapping between warriors, mages, ninjas, dragoons and more—lets you shape each party member’s growth with capacity points earned after fights.

Travel is a breeze: on foot, atop a chocobo, by boat, and eventually in an airship, with towns full of inns, shops and quirky NPCs that drive the quest to banish darkness. The game benefits from the veteran crew—Sakaguchi’s direction, Uematsu’s soundtrack, Gebelli’s programming—making this DS version a definitive, accessible remake of a beloved classic.

Storyline

Final Fantasy III begins on a Floating Continent that drifts above an unnamed world. A millennium ago, a high‑tech civilization tried to master the four light crystals, inadvertently summoning the Cloud of Darkness. Four dark crystals and their warriors halted the disaster, restoring balance but leaving the ancient culture in ruins. Four orphaned youths from Ur are chosen by the dying Wind Crystal, becoming the Warriors of Light as Onion Knights.

They meet Princess Sara, Desch, engineer Cid, Prince Alus, and scholars Doga and Unei while opposing Xande, who seeks to flood the world with darkness. After obtaining the Fire, Water, and Earth Crystals and the airship Invincible, they descend to the flooded surface. The heroes help Alus reclaim his kingdom, then storm the Crystal Tower, defeat Xande, and awaken the Cloud of Darkness. Doga and Unei sacrifice themselves to revive the party, who then join the original Warriors of Darkness, shatter the Cloud, revive the crystals, and restore balance.
