Summary

I fell in love with Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales the moment I slipped the stylus into its picture‑book world. The DS lets you guide a plump Chocobo through a vibrant 3D farm, tapping each bound volume to uncover a surprise micro‑game tucked inside. Those micro‑games feel like animated fables – a turtle‑cactus showdown or a boy who cried leviathan – and they swing between simple stylus puzzles and microphone‑cheered challenges, all while the story stays comfortably in the background. The real competitive thrill comes in the Pop‑up Duels: cards with swords, shields and funky abilities clash in turn‑based bouts that reward higher scores with stronger decks. Wireless play lets friends swap duels, trade scores in minigames, or jump straight into DS Download Play for a quick face‑off. Adding to the charm, Yuzo Takahashi arranged familiar Chocobo and Final Fantasy themes, and Toshiyuki Itahana painted the visuals with a "warm and fuzzy" palette that perfectly matches the bird’s reputation.

Storyline

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales, often called Chocobo Tales, puts you in control of the eponymous Chocobo. He lives on an island farm with the White Mage Shirma, the Black Mage Croma, and many other chocobos. The island is guarded by four elemental crystals. One day Croma discovers a magical tome and opens it, only to release the living evil book Darkmaster Bebuzzu. Bebuzzu immediately captures most of the chocobos, imprisoning them inside picture books scattered across the island.

Determined to rescue his friends, Chocobo journeys through the tomes, battling a cast of foes. He faces Irma, a strict chocobo trainer who intends to harness Bebuzzu’s power, along with her gang the Jailbirds. The strongest members of that gang—Greeble, Peekaboo, and Volg—stand in his way. By overcoming these challenges, Chocobo aims to defeat Bebuzzu and free the captured chocobos.
