Summary

The Nintendo DS remake of Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation was announced by Square Enix in late 2007 and handed to ArtePiazza for development, finally bringing the classic title to English‑speaking players in 2011. This version drops the original’s after‑battle monster recruitment, replaces the dual world‑maps with a built‑in overlay, and adds wireless "Tag Mode" for easy data sharing between two DS systems.

New visual flourishes animate monsters as they attack, and the game sprinkles in fresh side content like the Slime Arena, a Best Dresser Contest, and a Slime Curling mini‑game. Classic staples such as casinos, hidden mini‑medals, a day‑and‑night cycle, and the world‑map wagon all return, giving the adventure a lively, bustling feel.

The class system is deepened: characters earn eight‑level class ranks by battling, unlocking spells and skills that persist across class changes. Mastering starter classes unlocks hybrids—Warrior + Martial Artist becomes the Gladiator, and further combos lead to the Hero class—while secret classes like Dragon (Hackasaurus) and Liquid Metal Slime hide behind consumable books. Human party members also gain "tokugi" abilities, special attacks that don’t consume MP.

A few cosmetic tweaks round out the remake: Lizzie remains recruitable, the World and Magic maps are merged, and several character names were altered for the DS era (Mireille becomes Milly, Hassan turns into Carver, etc.).

Storyline

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation follows the series’ classic Hero, who awakens with amnesia and soon discovers that the world is split into a Real World and a Dream World made of people’s dreams. A great evil threatens both realms, forcing the Hero and his companions to travel between them using wells, map stairs, and mysterious holes. The game’s medieval setting is filled with castles, knights, and magic, and each world mirrors the other’s geography.

The adventure begins in the mountain town of Weaver’s Peak, where the Hero is tasked with retrieving a ceremonial crown for a festival. After rescuing the missing crown‑maker, he falls through a hidden hole into the Phantom World, a place where townsfolk cannot see him. By entering a special well he returns to his own world, only to learn that the Phantom World is actually the Real World while his original surroundings are the Dream World.

Guided to the kingdom of Somnia, the Hero meets Carver, Captain Blade, and other soldiers, eventually earning a place in the army. Together they locate the Mirror of Ra in Moonmirror Tower, use it to defeat the demon king Murdaw, and learn that Murdaw’s defeat only freed Somnia’s king, who reveals the true nature of the two worlds. The party then gathers legendary gear and discovers that Mortamor, the Archfiend, is pulling the strings behind the various monsters they have faced.

After a perilous journey to the Dread Realm—where their strength wanes and puzzles abound—the Hero, aided by the Supreme Sage brothers and a Pegasus‑fused horse, confronts and vanquishes Mortamor. The link between the Real and Dream Worlds is severed, the Dream World fades, and the remaining characters part ways, leaving the Hero’s legacy etched into the surviving Cloudgate Castle.
