Summary

The Nintendo DS remake of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen blends the classic 2‑D charm with 3‑D backdrops, smoothing graphics from the PlayStation version and adding fresh color to familiar towns. A key upgrade is the ability to directly command every party member in the last two chapters, giving players deeper tactical freedom. The Western release replaces many old names with versions closer to the original Japanese, and even adds region‑specific dialects – for example, Burland speakers now have a Scottish twang. While the Japanese DS version retained all content, the international edition trimmed the party‑talk feature, though it resurfaced later in the mobile ports which also introduced cloud saves and a quick‑save system. Fans appreciate the mix of nostalgic sprites, Koichi Sugiyama’s rearranged score, and the quirky linguistic flavor that gives each area its own personality.

Storyline

Dragon Quest IV: Michibikareshi Mono-tachi (often just called Dragon Quest IV) weaves five distinct journeys into a single epic. In Chapter 1, soldier Ragnar McRyan is sent by the King of Burland to investigate a rash of missing children, befriending the aspiring human Healslime Healie and defeating the monster behind the abductions. Chapter 2 follows Princess Alena, her mentor Kiryl and mage Borya as she escapes her castle, enters the Endor tournament, and discovers her homeland emptied of its people.

Chapter 3 tracks merchant Torneko, who leaves his family’s shop in Lakanaba to chase the dream of owning the world’s greatest store, eventually buying a shop in Endor and funding an underground expedition for legendary weapons. Chapter 4 centers on dancer Maya and fortune‑teller Meena, who seek revenge against Balzack, their father’s treacherous apprentice, and escape the Palais de Léon with help from Oojam.

Chapter 5 introduces the nameless Hero, the sole survivor of a mountain village destroyed by Psaro the Manslayer. Joined by the previous protagonists, the party gathers Zenithian armor, confronts Estark the Ruler of Evil, and finally defeats an evolving Psaro.

The DS remake adds a sixth chapter, a post‑game epilogue where the heroes ally with Psaro to avenge Rose, defeat the Dark Priest Aamon, and restore order.
