Storyline

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen breaks its story into five distinct chapters, each following a different protagonist before they finally unite. Chapter 1 follows Ragnar McRyan, a royal soldier in Burland who is sent by the king to investigate a rash of missing children. He is joined by Healie, a healslime who dreams of becoming human. Ragnar defeats the monster responsible, learns the creatures were hunting the Legendary Hero, and vows to protect the child‑hero.

Chapter 5 tells the Hero’s story: a nameless mountain village is razed by Psaro’s legions, leaving the Hero as the sole survivor. He gathers the four companions, defeats Balzack, the Marquis, and the revived Ruler of Evil Estark, and completes the Zenithian armor to confront Psaro in the Zenithian Castle. The DS remake’s optional Chapter 6 offers an alternate ending where the party works with a redeemed Psaro to avenge Rose’s death, revive her, and defeat the Dark Priest Aamon, restoring order to the world.
