Summary

Disgaea DS turned the beloved PSP version of Hour of Darkness into a handheld experience, keeping the core tactical RPG gameplay while adding a few DS‑specific twists. The biggest draw is the new multiplayer mode, which lets friends battle with the same depth the series is known for.

The DS version introduces Geo Cubes – magic items that can boost abilities, summon monsters or even damage opponents – and randomly spawning Demon Gadgets that can raise a unit up to 30 levels in a single hit. Hidden bosses in the Cave of Ordeals also unlock fan‑favorite characters such as Adell, Rozalin, the Dark Assembly guide Pleinair, and the newly playable Overlord Zetta.

Because of the cartridge’s limited space, the game drops the toggle between English and Japanese dialogue and many voice‑overs, a compromise many fans accepted for the added content. Released in North America on September 23 2008 and in Europe on April 3 2009, Disgaea DS remained the series’ sole Nintendo entry until the Switch version of Disgaea 5 arrived nine years later.

Storyline

Disgaea DS begins with Laharl waking from a two‑year coffin nap to find his father, King Krichevskoy, dead. Etna tells him the throne is empty, so he storms Vyers’ castle, defeats the demon who calls himself the “Dark Adonis,” and meets angel trainee Flonne, sent by Seraph Lamington to assassinate the dead king. Flonne joins to test whether demons can feel love, while Archangel Vulcanus watches suspiciously.

Etna demands payment for her Prinnies, so Laharl raids Dinero Palace and defeats Hoggmeiser. Flonne convinces him to spare Hoggmeiser’s son, earning the demon’s loyalty, and a blackmail photo forces Laharl into a duel for overlordship. The duel brings Maderas, a vampire exiled for stealing the king’s pretzels, who had been manipulating Etna’s memory and had her poison Laharl.

Etna breaks free, and together with Laharl, Flonne and the former mid‑boss they defeat Maderas. Later, Prinnies abandon the castle; Laharl chases them into Death’s realm and learns that Big Sis Prinny, his mother, became a Prinny to save him.
