Summary
Dig Dug: Digging Strike (often just called Dig Dug Digging Strike) takes the classic arcade tunnel‑digging formula and thrusts it into a 3‑D DS experience. Each of the fifteen stages is split between a colorful top‑screen world and a bottom‑screen underground where you, as Taizo Hori, line up massive stakes to crack fault lines and drop the boss island into the sea. The familiar Pookas and Fygars return, but they’re joined by ghosts that phase through dirt, waddling penguins and tiny octopuses, all of which can be popped with air or knocked into rolling rocks, lava pits or quicksand. Power‑ups range from magnetic weights that force stakes down to time‑stop clocks, while collectible fossils unlock a secret bonus stage. Some items trigger minigames that let you control Susumu in homages to Xevious and Rally‑X, and gathering weapon parts lets you build faster drills. Developed by the external studio Bullets and rooted in the abandoned Dig Dug 3 prototype, the game earned mixed reviews—critics praised its blend of old‑school mechanics and quirky collectibles, but noted its brief length and limited touchscreen integration.
