Storyline

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is set in 1944 Europe during World War II, with most of the action taking place inside Dracula’s castle. The villain Brauner has turned the castle into a series of painted portals, each leading to a pocket dimension that the heroes must explore.

The story follows Jonathan Morris, son of John Morris from Bloodlines, who wields the Vampire Killer whip, and Charlotte Aulin, a mage descended from the Belnades clan. They are aided by a priest‑merchant named Vincent Dorin and a ghost called Wind, who later reveals himself as Eric Lecarde, a veteran of the earlier battle against Dracula.

Brauner, a former painter who rebuilt the castle from the souls of war dead, commands three new vampires: himself and the twin sisters Stella and Loretta, who are Eric’s daughters turned by Brauner. After confronting the twins, Charlotte cures them, and they help Jonathan unlock the whip’s full power. The duo then defeats Brauner, only for Death to kill him and break the seal to the throne room.

With the seal broken, Jonathan and Charlotte face Dracula, who merges with Death to become a stronger foe. The pair defeat the merged enemy, watch the castle collapse, and later receive a final farewell from Eric’s spirit as he thanks them for ending the curse.
