Summary
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia puts the Glyph System front and centre, letting me slot over a hundred different glyphs onto Shanoa’s arms and back. Each glyph consumes MP, and when I string them together the Union attack draws on the Heart Points gauge for a burst of power. The system also doubles as a puzzle tool, letting certain symbols trigger doors or bridges.
The game sprawls across 20 varied locales—forests, mountain peaks and even oceanic depths—linked by an overworld map and peppered with side‑quests that hand out useful items. Finishing the main run unlocks hard mode, a boss‑rush challenge and Albus mode, an alternate playable character. I can swap gear with friends online or duel them, and the DS can even talk to Castlevania Judgment on the Wii for extra unlocks. Notably, the legendary Vampire Killer whip never appears, marking a unique shift for the series.
Storyline
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is set in the 1800s, after the events of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, when the Belmont Clan has vanished. The Order of Ecclesia creates three magical glyphs—Anger, Hatred and Agony—collectively called Dominus, and selects Shanoa as the human vessel for its power. During the ritual Albus steals the glyphs, causing Shanoa to lose her memories and emotions, and he kidnaps the villagers of Wygol, who are the last known descendants of the Belmonts, to experiment with their blood.
Shanoa rescues the villagers while hunting down Albus, who reluctantly hands over two glyphs before becoming possessed by the third. She defeats him, absorbs his soul and the final glyph, and learns that Dominus, not Albus, took her memories and that the villagers’ blood was meant to help control the power without killing her. Confronting the order’s leader Barlowe, she discovers his plan to revive Dracula using her as a sacrifice.
After Barlowe’s defeat, Dracula’s castle appears. Shanoa uses Dominus to slay Dracula, seemingly at the cost of her life, but Albus sacrifices his own soul, restores her memories, and she escapes as the castle crumbles.
