Summary

Blood of Bahamut drops you onto bustling towns perched on the backs of dormant giants, only to watch those titans stir and threaten their residents. The DS splits the action across both screens, letting up to four players chip away at a beast’s armor, strike its core, then finish off scattered limbs while smaller minions surge around it. Each victory yields “materials” that you can mash together into sturdier weapons, and with more than 130 missions the grind feels rewarding rather than repetitive. The game’s direction from Motomu Toriyama, who helped craft the classic Bahamut Lagoon, shines through its ambitious dual‑screen battles, and Naoshi Mizuta’s soundtrack adds an epic flair that even made it onto a dedicated CD. Despite an enthusiastic Famitsu score of 31/40, Square Enix kept the title Japan‑only, turning down Ignition Entertainment’s pitch for a North‑American launch; still, the modest sales—around 66 000 in the first month and just over 100 000 by the end of 2010—show it found a niche among co‑op action fans.

Storyline

Blood of Bahamut takes place on a sprawling metropolis perched atop a massive living beast called a Gigant. When the Gigant suddenly awakens, the city is assaulted by hostile forces, forcing the inhabitants to fight for survival. The story follows Ibuki, a sword‑wielding summoner who carries the White Dragon within him, and Yui, a cane‑staff‑bearing member of the Gigant clan.
Together they must protect their home and travel to other cities that were also built on the backs of slumbering Gigants now stirring awake. The Gigants—Bahamut, Ifrit, Shiva, Fenrir, Gilgamesh and others—are sentient beings that sometimes join the battle to defend themselves.
Seven heroes join the fight: Kamo‑Ogre, commander of the Ifrit clan with a battle axe; Santiago, a Fenrir elder wielding a spear; Ryuma, a free‑spirit from the Shiva clan armed with a handheld cannon; Ren, a samurai‑style swordsman; and Aslan, a mysterious knight brandishing a greatsword.
