Summary
Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled feels like a classic console RPG dropped onto the Nintendo DS, letting you swipe with the stylus, button‑masher, or a hybrid of both. The game leans heavily on turn‑based battles where unit placement matters—watch the grid, flank enemies, and time skills for maximum impact. Seven of the eight party members have set skill‑sets, while the remaining slot is fully customizable, giving a modest but satisfying level of tactical depth.
Beyond the combat, the title boasts seven possible endings and a plethora of side‑quests that reshuffle dialogue each time you switch the lead character, encouraging multiple playthroughs. Save points anchor your progress, while a risky quick‑save can be summoned at any moment.
Originally pitched as a Game Boy Advance project under the working name “Project Exile,” development outlasted the GBA’s market life and shifted to the DS, where over a thousand maps were crafted for its sprawling world of roughly fifty locations.
Storyline
In the magical kingdom of Bel Lenora, everyone wields sorcery—except a man named Vai, who led a demonic rebellion and was sealed away by a duke’s general. Fifteen years later, Kairu, a calm swordsman and war‑orphan who also cannot use magic, serves Duke Averay, the hero who once defeated Vai. Mocked by the populace, Kairu only finds acceptance from Aurora, Averay’s fiery sister‑sorceress, who vows to protect him.\n\nWhen the king orders Kairu’s exile to the very cave that holds Vai, the duke hands him the Averay blade before sealing the entrance, and Aurora follows into the darkness. Along the way they encounter Nephi, a smooth‑tongued stranger obsessed with the blade who repeatedly assists and vanishes, and Isa, a white‑haired commander of the Genufan army known as the "witch."\n\nJoining their quest are Rogurd, a treasure hunter chasing a mysterious "IT" and constantly crossing paths with rival Gavin, Nym, an Ashen Eye who summons spirits, and Doll, a customizable living doll found in the cloud‑bound factory. Vai himself appears as a playable party member, completing a cast of outcasts battling both their own curses and the kingdom’s hidden threats.
