Summary

Avalon Code puts the Nintendo DS’s touch‑screen front and center, letting you wield the Book of Prophecy on the lower screen. By striking a creature, plant, weapon or person with the Book (always mapped to the B button), you perform a “Code Scan” that records the target on a fresh page. Each page is a mosaic of tiny seven‑shaped Code pieces that snap together like pentominoes, and rearranging them can strip away flaws, boost stats, or even transfer ailments.

Pages earn Code Points, and when the Book’s total reaches a threshold it levels up, expanding the Mental Map from a modest 3×3 grid to a larger canvas. New space unlocks side‑quests, mini‑games, and News Flashes that keep the world feeling alive. Dungeons are a series of linked rooms with puzzles—lighting torches, flipping switches, defeating foes—under a ticking clock, culminating in a boss battle that awards medals based on performance.

The romance system lets you pick either Yumil or Tia as the protagonist and befriend up to fourteen NPCs. Each character’s personal troubles appear as locked Code pieces, and solving their side‑quests frees those pieces, deepening relationships.

Visually, the game showcases a surprisingly robust 3D engine for a DS title, earning praise from Famitsu and a solid 8.3/10 from IGN. Critics, however, noted the linear plot and repetitive combat, landing the title at a respectable 71 on Metacritic.

Storyline

Avalon Code follows a young peasant tormented by apocalyptic and prophetic nightmares for weeks before the adventure begins. In the opening cinematic, a mysterious voice from a sentient record called the Book of Prophecy reveals that the world has endured countless reincarnations, trapped in a cycle of correction, destruction, and rebirth until true enlightenment is reached. The voice appoints the protagonist as the Chosen One, tasking them with judging people, places, and things as worthy or unworthy to carry over into the next iteration. To fulfill this duty, the Chosen One must locate and befriend four elemental Book Spirits hidden within the Book. Beneath a superficial feud with a neighboring kingdom, a hidden plot—shaped by the previous Chosen One’s decisions—aims to accelerate an imminent apocalypse.
