Summary
Astérix & Obélix XXL 2: Mission Wifix lands on the DS as a side‑scrolling platformer that mixes 3D‑flavored graphics with classic 2D action. The port brings the quirky locations from the original—Little Paris, WCW, LuckSore, Little Venetia, Pirate Island, and even SeizeUs Palace—rendered in surprising detail for handheld play. What really sets the DS version apart are its stylus‑driven mini‑games: four can be launched any time from the main menu, while two extra challenges appear only in wireless multiplayer.
The multiplayer modes let you battle friends over Wi‑Fi, turning the mini‑games into quick, competitive bouts. Even when you’re not solving puzzles within the story, you can jump straight into a touch‑screen challenge, giving a nice break from the platforming. Overall, the DS reinterpretation keeps the comic’s humor and wild settings while adding a handful of stylus tricks that feel fresh and fun.
Storyline
In Astérix & Obélix XXL 2: Mission: Wifix the Romans kidnap several druids, and Getafix oddly sides with Caesar. Asterix and Obelix travel to Rome only to discover that Caesar has turned the city into a massive amusement park called Las Vegum, a parody of Las Vegas, where the captured druids are displayed in a human zoo. Determined to rescue their friends, the Gauls enlist the help of Roman spy Sam Shieffer, a nod to the Splinter Cell hero.
Las Vegum is split into six themed zones: Lutetia, WCW, LuckSore (a take on Luxor), Little Venetia, Pirate Island, and the SeizeUs Palace. Each area is filled with traps and puzzles that the duo must overcome. Along the way they confront a Roman centurion named Larry Craft, a playful reference to Lara Croft, who serves as a mini‑boss. Caesar even calls Asterix “Mr. Anderson,” echoing The Matrix.
The game’s enemies are caricatures of famous video‑game heroes: Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Rayman, Pac‑Man and Ryu appear as Roman soldiers. Caesar also deploys identical clones to battle the Gauls. The storyline blends classic Asterix humor with pop‑culture parodies, giving players a quirky rescue mission through a theme‑park gaol.
