Summary

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin turns the familiar grid‑based combat of the series into a grittier, post‑apocalyptic setting. Players command COs who now gain powers later and only affect units in a limited CO zone, while individual units can level up to Vet after enough kills, giving modest attack and defence boosts.
The roster adds a Bike for fast captures, a Flare vehicle that lifts fog, an Anti‑Tank with counter‑attack, the heavyweight War Tank, the low‑cost Duster interceptor, Seaplanes from carriers, and a missile‑armed Gunboat. New property types include temporary ports and airports built by the Rig, plus a Radar that clears fog, and terrain like Wasteland and Ruins introduces movement penalties and defensive bonuses.
For the first time the series supports Nintendo Wi‑Fi Connection, letting two players fight online or share custom 5×5–10×10 maps that anyone can download. Over 150 premade maps are also included, and a hot‑seat mode lets up to four locals rotate turns with a single cartridge.
Critics praised its sharper visuals, deep yet accessible strategy and the balanced online component, earning scores in the mid‑80s on Metacritic and a 2008 Best Online Multiplayer award from IGN. Early U.S. sales passed 130 000 units within three months.

Storyline

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin takes place in a post‑apocalyptic world after a catastrophic meteor shower wiped out most of humanity. The surviving Rubinelle 12th Battalion, known as Brenner’s Wolves, works to aid refugees and restore order amid the shattered nations of Rubinelle and Lazuria.

A rogue sergeant called the Beast attacks the battalion, but cadet Will is rescued by Brenner and Lin and later teams up with an amnesiac named Isabella, whose hidden military knowledge becomes crucial. The Battalion eventually allies with the New Rubinelle Army and confronts the Lazurian forces, defeating them at Fort Lazuria before rescuing captured Lazurian soldiers from an NRA camp.

The NRA leader Greyfield unleashes a devastating weapon that destroys a city and kills Brenner; Lin retaliates, stopping the missile launch and killing Greyfield. Afterwards the Intelligent Defense Systems, led by Dr. Caulder, attacks with biological weapons and the massive bomber Great Owl. The 12th Battalion brings down the Owl, infiltrates Caulder’s laboratory The Nest, and kills him, ending the war. One year later the village New Hope thrives under a sunrise seen for the first time since the strikes.
