Summary
When I first grabbed *007: Quantum of Solace* for the DS I was surprised by the sideways orientation and the absence of a traditional FPS setup. Bond is steered by dragging the stylus across the screen, much like in *The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass*, while the physical buttons mainly trigger melee strikes. This design lets the touch panel handle almost every action—from firing to climbing or jumping at marked points.
The game adopts a third‑person isometric view that flips to an over‑the‑shoulder angle during close‑quarter fights, keeping the combat feel dynamic. Scattered casino chips act as currency for upgrades such as tighter aim, while playing cards can be equipped in different poker‑hand combinations to tweak Bond’s abilities.
The narrative deviates from the console versions: the opening at White’s Estate is replaced with an MI6 training simulation, Camille is removed entirely, and after street‑gang brawls in Bolivia the final showdown takes place at Guy Haines’ mansion against Greene and Mr. White, giving the DS edition a uniquely compact Bond story.
Storyline
007: Quantum of Solace for the Nintendo DS adapts the James Bond films Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, but its story diverges from the console versions. The game opens with a training simulation at MI6 Headquarters instead of the original White’s Estate mission. After the tutorial Bond is sent to Bolivia, where he battles street gangs before the plot heads toward its climax.
In the original narrative Bond kidnaps the mysterious Quantum operative Mr White, interrogates him with M, and is ambushed by the rogue MI6 agent Craig Mitchell, who is killed while White escapes. Bond later photographs a Quantum gathering at the Bregenz Opera House, spotting Dominic Greene. The story then jumps to a crash‑landing in Bolivia, where Greene is buying land and a coup is being funded.
The DS version omits Camille Montes entirely and replaces the hotel showdown with a final assault on Guy Haines’ mansion. Here Bond confronts both Greene and Mr White in back‑to‑back boss fights, ending with an explosive conclusion that leaves Bond ready to re‑enter the field.
