Summary
Mischief Makers (Yuke‑Yuke Trouble Makers in Japan) turns the Nintendo 64 into a surprisingly flat playground, layering 2‑D action over pre‑rendered 3‑D backdrops. The result is a crisp 2.5‑D look that feels both retro and oddly modern for a cartridge‑based title. It’s the first true side‑scroller on the console, proving the hardware could still host classic platforming without sacrificing visual flair.
The core of the game is Marina’s grab‑and‑shake mechanic. Almost every object can be seized, then rattled to launch as a projectile, turn into a homing missile, or reveal loot. Red, blue and green gems restore health; a hidden yellow gem in each stage lengthens the final cutscene. Marina darts, jumps, boosts with a jetpack, slides, hovers and rolls, moving in all eight directions and zipping through wire‑maze sections on bikes or other platforms.
Five distinct worlds host roughly a dozen levels each, mixing pure action stages with brain‑teasing puzzles. Every world culminates in a mid‑level and a final boss that make use of screen‑scaling and rotation tricks, keeping the challenge fresh. The goal is simple—reach the warp star at the end of each level—but the way you get there is a chaotic, shake‑filled ride.
Storyline
Yuke Yuke!! Trouble Makers takes place on the distant world of Planet Clancer, a planet teetering on the brink of civil war. The Emperor and his Imperial forces have brain‑washed the native Clancers into kidnapping the visiting robotics genius Professor Theo.
The player controls Ultra‑InterGalactic‑Cybot G Marina Liteyears, a robotic maid created by Theo, who chases after the professor to free him from the Emperor’s grasp. Almost everything on Clancer—people, buildings, even pets—bears identical “sad” faces with red, glowing eyes. Occasionally a Clancer named Teran steps in for Marina, while Calina, a petulant Clancer who mimics Marina, appears repeatedly for comic effect.
