Summary

Yoshi's Story feels like a pop‑up storybook come to life, with each world rendered in vivid pre‑rendered 3D that mimics cardboard, fabric, plastic or wood. The art direction was deliberately 2.5D, a nod to the original Yoshi’s Island aesthetic while taking advantage of the N64’s power.
The game offers two main modes – Story and Trial – and each course challenges you to fill a Fruit Frame by gobbling 30 pieces of fruit. Scoring is a puzzle in itself: chaining the same fruit, hitting your Favorite or Lucky fruit, and especially snatching melons, all boost your points dramatically.
Courses are organized into six "pages" of four levels each, but only one level per page is initially available. Collecting up to three Special Hearts in a level unlocks additional courses on the next page, turning the progression into a strategic hunt for hidden secrets.
Yoshis can run, duck, jump, ground‑pound, hover briefly and launch eggs, though eggs now stick to enemies instead of ricocheting. Two extra colors – White and Black – are unlockable and grant an extra life when both are found.
Originally titled Yoshi’s Island 64 for the 64DD, the project shifted to cartridge and became the first Yoshi platformer without Miyamoto at the helm, though he still supervised. Composer Kazumi Totaka not only gave Yoshi his iconic voice but also hid his signature 19‑note melody in the Trial Mode menu, and the soundtrack dynamically shifts with Yoshi’s mood, swapping to a rock version when he’s Super Happy.

Storyline

In Yoshi's Story, the Yoshis live peacefully on Yoshi Island, their happiness sustained by the fruit‑bearing Super Happy Tree. Baby Bowser, jealous of their joy, casts a spell that turns the entire island into a pop‑up storybook and steals the Super Happy Tree, plunging the island into gloom. Six surviving eggs hatch into baby Yoshis who, sensing the darkness, set out to restore cheer. They travel through the six pages of the storybook, each page offering four courses but only one path leads toward Baby Bowser’s castle. After completing the final course they confront Baby Bowser, defeat him, and a narration recounts their journey, ending with the Yoshis gathered around the revived Super Happy Tree. If a Yoshi is knocked out, a cutscene shows Kamek’s minions kidnapping that Yoshi, removing it from play.
