Summary
Yoshi's Story turns the world into a pop‑up picture book, with each level rendered in vivid pre‑rendered 3D that mimics cardboard, fabric, plastic and wood. The game swaps the classic side‑scroll for a puzzle‑heavy score chase: you fill a Fruit Frame by gobbling 30 pieces of fruit, chaining the same type for extra points and hunting the Lucky Fruit for a big boost. Six hatchling Yoshis, protected by their shells, are the only ones immune to Baby Bowser’s spell, and you can pick any color Yoshi—white and black become unlockable extras that grant two lives when both are found.
Gameplay feels tight thanks to the N64’s analog stick, letting you run, duck, jump, ground‑pound, hover briefly and launch eggs that no longer ricochet. Eggs instantly turn enemies into projectiles, streamlining the action. Courses are grouped into six "pages" of four stages each, and the number of Special Hearts you collect determines how many new courses open on the next page, adding a subtle progression layer.
The soundtrack, composed by Kazumi Totaka, reacts to Yoshi’s mood: a melancholy downgrade when the Smile Meter empties, or a rock‑infused surge when you become Super Happy. Critics praised the art direction, audio and smooth controls, but many noted the low difficulty and short length, making it a charming yet breezy experience that shines most for younger players or nostalgic collectors.
Storyline
On Yoshi's Story, the peaceful Yoshis of Yoshi Island thrive under the fruit‑bearing Super Happy Tree. Baby Bowser, jealous of their joy, casts a spell that turns the island into a pop‑up storybook, steals the tree, and plunges the land into gloom. Six baby Yoshi eggs survive, hatch, and, sensing something is wrong, set out to restore happiness by retrieving the Super Happy Tree. Their journey takes them through six storybook pages, each containing four courses, but only one course per page leads toward Baby Bowser’s castle. After completing the final course, the Yoshi in play confronts Baby Bowser in a showdown; defeating him triggers a narration that recounts each page and course, ending with the Yoshis gathered around the restored Super Happy Tree, celebrating together. If a Yoshi is knocked out, a cutscene shows Kamek’s minions kidnapping that Yoshi, removing it from play.
