Summary
Worms Armageddon lets you command a ragtag squad of cartoonish earthworms armed with over 55 bizarre weapons – from the ground‑shaking Earthquake to the icy Freeze and the ever‑explosive French Sheep Strike. The turn‑based battles unfold on a fully destructible 2‑D board, where a single well‑timed shot can turn a friendly hill into a crater of chaos. Its humor shines through quirky voice packs, with more than 30 custom sound banks ranging from stiff‑upper‑lip British accents to cyber‑worm chatter.
Beyond the frantic deathmatches, the game offers a 40‑plus mission campaign and five training modes such as Sheep Racing, Crazy Crates and Advanced Weapon Training, giving newcomers a sandbox to master the physics‑heavy arsenal. Players can sculpt their own arenas using the built‑in terrain editor, import custom images, and even design bespoke teams with personalized names, flags, and victory fanfares.
Multiplayer received a serious upgrade: you can handicap teams, form Allied Teams to gang up on a rival, unleash the chaotic "Worms Disease" or score Home Runs, all while the classic hot‑seat mode keeps the party going on a single console. The Nintendo 64 port, released in March 2000, was one of the first on the system to include the terrain editor, cementing its reputation as a party staple.
Critics praised the refined gameplay, stylized graphics and deep customization, landing the title on numerous “greatest games” lists and earning awards for Best Strategy Game on both PlayStation and Dreamcast. Even a decade later the codebase lives on – Team 17 built Worms W.M.D. on Armageddon’s engine and continues to push updates, proving the can of worms is still far from empty.
