Summary
World Cup 98 lets you dive straight into the tournament that defined summer 1998, whether you stick to the real groups or shuffle the 40 licensed nations into a random draw. Each match is staged in a faithful recreation of the actual stadium, and the competition follows the authentic rules – group games end in a draw, while knockout rounds can go to extra time and a penalty shoot‑out.
Beyond the main cup, the game offers a friendly mode where you can pit any of the included teams against each other, and a "World Cup Classics" series that unlocks fifteen historic fixtures, from the 1930s sepia‑toned battles to black‑and‑white finals of the 1950s and 60s. Those retro matches even feature period‑accurate kits, hairstyles and commentary from BBC legend Kenneth Wolstenholme.
The N64 version carries the same polished 3D engine as FIFA: Road to World Cup 98, with improved strategy swapping and player positioning. After each match you’ll see a man‑of‑the‑match caption, clean‑sheet notices, and at the tournament’s end the Golden Boot and Fair Play award winners, just like the real World Cup.
