Summary

Wipeout 64 takes the anti‑gravity racing formula into 2098, building on the high‑speed hovercraft combat that defined its predecessors while exploiting the Nintendo 64’s analogue stick for razor‑sharp handling. The game adds a four‑player split‑screen, letting friends battle side‑by‑side, and introduces a Challenge Mode where you must nail time trials, dominate the podium, or rack up eliminations with new team‑specific weapons. Among the fresh armaments are three‑rocket bursts, rear‑locking missiles, and the exclusive Cyclone power‑up that supercharges your firepower, while an on‑screen elimination counter tracks how many opponents you’ve taken out. Track design largely mirrors classic circuits but with eased corners, altered elevations, and no split sections, giving a familiar yet tweaked feel. Despite being on a cartridge, the title squeezes nine electronic tracks from Rob Lord, Mark Bandola, Fluke and Propellerheads, and features distinct male and female race announcers that cue weapon usage and race events. Critics praised the blend of speed, variety and the new multiplayer depth, cementing Wipeout 64 as a standout futuristic racer on the N64.
