Summary
WinBack: Covert Operations (often just called WinBack) introduced a cover mechanic that felt fresh on the N64 – you duck behind corners, peek out, and fire, a system that later echoed in titles like Metal Gear Solid 2 and Gears of War. Every gun is fitted with a laser sight, letting you line up shots without a lock‑on, and damage is color‑coded on enemies (blue, green, red) so you can gauge how close you are to a takedown. The game blends third‑person shooting with stealth, rewarding careful positioning over frantic run‑and‑gun, and even lets you melee enemies from behind for instant kills. Beyond the single‑player run, WinBack packs six multiplayer modes – Death Match, Lethal Tag, Quick Draw, Cube Hunt, Team Battle and Point Match – supporting up to four players, plus a tutorial to get the controls down. A later Nintendo Classics re‑release in 2021 gave a new generation a chance to experience its pioneering cover and laser‑sight gameplay, cementing its niche in shooter history.
Storyline
In WinBack: Covert Operations, a terrorist group called the Crying Lions from the fictional nation of Saroczia hijacks a space‑based laser weapon known as the GULF system. Their leader, Colonel Kenneth Coleman, uses the laser to strike a military installation that houses the satellite’s controls. The U.S. Secretary of Defense calls in the Special Covert Action Team (SCAT) to retake the complex and neutralize the threat. Team member Jean‑Luc Cougar is the last to escape a helicopter that is shot down, and the player assumes his role.
Jean‑Luc leaps over a wall into a parking lot, where the scattered SCAT members must be rescued while navigating laser traps, puzzles, machine‑gun nests, ambushes, and mazes. The ultimate goal is to reach the satellite control room before the GULF laser can recharge and fire again. Along the way, the player confronts a series of bosses, including the Crying Lions’ elite commanders.
The game features three possible endings that depend on how quickly Jean‑Luc reaches the control room. Each ending follows a similar sequence of events—killing the generator‑room boss Jin, a shootout that leaves Jake dead and Lisa captured by Cecile, and a duel with Deathmask that Jean‑Luc wins.
In the good ending, Cecile betrays and kills Coleman, then Dan, the SCAT leader, appears as a traitor and is mortally wounded after revealing his half‑Saroczian motives. Jean‑Luc defeats the wounded Dan and finally kills Cecile, after which Lisa helps destroy the GULF satellite and the team escapes.
The normal ending mirrors the good one with minor differences: Dan’s fate and Cecile’s survival are ambiguous, but the satellite is still destroyed and the operation ends in partial success.
The bad ending occurs when Jean‑Luc arrives too late; Lisa and Jake are already dead, the satellite has fired twice, demolishing the Pentagon and the White House. Jean‑Luc kills Cecile, Coleman commits suicide, and only Jean‑Luc and Keith survive, marking Operation Winback as a failure.
