Summary

WCW Backstage Assault throws you straight into the chaos of a wrestling arena’s backstage, ditching the traditional ring for fourteen gritty locations—including a brand‑new semi‑trailer area. Every match follows hardcore rules: you can win by pin, submission or knockout, but disqualifications and count‑outs are off the table, so weapons and environmental hazards become your best friends. The game rewards momentum—pull off uninterrupted strikes, grapples or taunts, hit the max, and you can unleash a finishing move before the meter drops.

The core mode, Hardcore Challenge, lets you chase a championship by hopping through a seven‑level, sixteen‑room complex, starting and ending each title run in the infamous Truck Arena. Wins unlock new rooms, moves and hidden wrestlers, while a single loss gives you one more shot before the campaign ends. Exhibition offers quick one‑on‑one bouts, plus quirky First Blood and Human Torch matches that let you bleed opponents or set them ablaze with a flaming barrel.

Critics weren’t kind: the N64 version landed a 48/100 on Metacritic, with scores ranging from 2/10 at CNET Gamecenter to 9/10 at GameZone, and many lamented the cartoon‑ish graphics and the departure from classic ring‑based wrestling gameplay.
