Summary
Virtual Pro Wrestling 2: Ōdō Keishō—sometimes just called VPW 2—is the Japan‑only sequel to the N64 classic Virtual Pro Wrestling 64. The game uses the same engine as WWF WrestleMania 2000 but swaps the roster for a pure puro‑resu lineup, officially licensing All Japan Pro Wrestling while cloaking other performers behind generic names that can be edited to mimic the real talent. Its career mode, Royal Road Succession, mirrors the Road to WrestleMania structure and runs for twelve months of tournaments, league play, and rankings.
What really stands out are the hundreds of move combinations—including hazardous strikes like the hangman’s DDT and Burning Hammer—and a unique grappling system that even accommodates mixed‑martial‑arts rules. Edit mode boasts a detailed mask creator, belt‑design options, and a “Logic” setting that determines AI move choices for your created wrestlers. The roster tops 98 fighters (23 unlockable), with 16 custom slots pushing the potential total to 114—AKI’s largest ever.
Famitsu gave it 30/40, and IGN’s Aaron Boulding called it a must‑have for hardcore wrestling fans despite a bland intro animation. It became the second‑most popular import N64 title after Sin & Punishment, solidifying its cult status among retro collectors.
