Summary
Virtual Chess 64 turns the N64 into a deep chess opponent. The built‑in engine scales its thinking time to match any skill level, letting beginners learn while veterans can crank the “Level 12” setting and wait minutes—or even hours—for a perfect line. Every capture triggers a short animated cutscene, a nod to Battle Chess, and you can choose between a 2D board or a 3D view.
The tutorial is split into seven sections, starting with a basic text‑and‑visual guide and moving through classic mates, tougher puzzles, and end‑game patterns like the pawn‑square rule. Four 2D piece sets and multiple board designs are selectable, and an editor lets you place pieces anywhere—though a bug disables castling in those custom games. “Meditation” mode lets the engine think on your clock, sometimes chewing through a position for days until it finds a forced mate.
Critics were split. The AI’s toughness and the thorough, interactive tutorial earned praise as a solid alternative to a human opponent. Reviewers, however, complained about the 3D perspective, carved pieces that were hard to read, and a camera that only rotates in one direction. The capture animations, while novel, quickly grew irritating, leaving scores in the mid‑60s range.
