Summary

V‑Rally '99 packs more than 40 original tracks across eight worldwide locales, letting me tear through jungles, canyons, deserts and snow‑capped mountains while the weather throws rain, fog or clouds into the mix. The variety feels fresh each lap, especially when I tweak the car’s performance settings to match the shifting conditions.

The N64 version got a revised physics engine that gives the rally cars a smoother, more responsive feel, and the roster was updated to mirror the 1998 World Rally Championship lineup. Handling still feels a bit floaty at times, but the ability to fine‑tune suspension and power makes the ride surprisingly realistic.

Hidden cars and secret tracks add a layer of discovery, even though the cartridge holds no background music. Critics in Europe praised the sheer amount of content—over 50 tracks when bonuses are counted—while North American reviewers were harsher on the late draw‑in graphics and the floaty feel. IGN even suggested the game might have fared better if it had arrived a year earlier, before the flood of strong N64 racers.
