Summary
Turok: Rage Wars turns the Turok franchise into a split‑screen multiplayer party that can cram up to four players—or bots—into frantic deathmatches. The game leans heavily on its diverse arsenal: six selectable weapons at a time, fed by bullet, energy, or explosive ammo, and Tal'Set’s cheat‑like ability to carry everything. Scattered Power Cores act like Quake III pickups, granting brief random bonuses, while 50 medals unlock cheats and character skins for extra bragging rights.
Beyond the multiplayer chaos, there’s a single‑player Trials mode that pushes you through death‑match style stages and four bosses, and a cooperative Two‑Player Trials option that rewards unique items—though early black‑cartridge copies suffered a glitch that hid certain rewards until Acclaim swapped them for the rarer grey version. The Expansion Pak isn’t required, but plugging it in boosts the resolution from the standard mushy look to a sharper visual experience.
Critics praised the fast, well‑defined arenas and responsive controls, yet they often dismissed the solo ladder as little more than a training ground for the main multiplayer draw. In the end, if you’re after an N64 party shooter with plenty of unlockable characters and quirky power‑ups, Rage Wars delivers.
