Summary
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil pushed the N64’s hardware to its limits. With the optional Expansion Pak the game could run at a crisp 640×480, showcasing real‑time shadow casting, reduced distance fog and far more detailed polygon models than its predecessor. The single‑player campaign unfolds across six huge, hub‑connected levels, where you collect Primagen Keys, talismans and other relics to unlock new zones and powerful abilities, while an automap helps you navigate the labyrinthine terrain.
The multiplayer side supports up to four players via split‑screen, offering Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and a frantic Frag Tag mode with fully customizable time limits, maps and character choices. Developers polished the engine over a 21‑month run with a core team of 18, adding a third, more graphic death animation that gave each kill extra visceral flair.
Critically, the title earned an 89% GameRankings aggregate and won GameSpot’s 1998 Shooting Game of the Year, moving 1.4 million copies by early 1999. Its reputation endures among retro fans for the blend of deep level design, advanced enemy AI, and a multiplayer experience that still feels surprisingly robust today.
Storyline
Seeds of Evil opens with the new Turok, Joshua Fireseed, stepping through a portal to confront the alien Adon. Adon explains that the Elders of the Lost Land, the Lazarus Concordance, summoned Joshua to stop the Primagen—an ancient alien trapped in its own Lightship after trying to witness the birth of the universe.
The Primagen’s awakening has warped reality into the Lost Land, a realm where time has no meaning. It rallies primitive races to destroy five Energy Totems that bind it to the Lightship; their loss would free the Primagen and unleash a universe‑shattering shockwave. Joshua battles the Primagen’s forces, gaining ancient magical powers from sacred talisman chambers, while a mysterious entity called Oblivion creates false talismans that lead to Flesh Eater‑infested areas.
In the final confrontation Joshua reaches the Primagen’s Lightship and defeats the entity. The Energy Totems remain protected, but traces of the Primagen’s telepathic power linger. Adon reveals that the opposing force still exists, setting the stage for the sequel, Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion.
