Summary
One‑on‑one brawls and tag‑team tournaments drive the chaos in Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry, with every arena ripped straight from classic cartoon episodes – think the kitchen showdown or a rickety boxing ring. Players fling everything from shovels and tennis rackets to exploding bombs and fruit, while hidden power‑ups grant temporary invincibility or a toxic green gas that contaminates the opponent who touches it.
The roster starts with Tom and Jerry, but beating the game with each unlocks the rest of the gang – Butch, Duckling, Tuffy, Spike and Tyke – each sporting their own quirky attack set. All seven fighters share the same slap‑slap‑kick feel, but the environment’s interactive objects keep the fights fresh.
Development kicked off in late 1999, with VIS Interactive picking the N64 specifically because the console lacked a true fighting title. Controls were stripped down for younger players, and Alan Marriott supplied every voice. The game hit North America on November 8 2000 and Europe four days later.
Critics were split: IGN gave it 6.8/10, calling it the next best N64 fighter after Super Smash Bros., while GameSpot rated it 6.6/10 for its accessibility. Nintendo Power was more generous at 8.3/10, praising the multiplayer and precise controls, whereas N64 Magazine slammed it at 35% for lazy execution. French magazine Actu & Soluces 64 landed an 81% score, noting the faithful cartoon locations as a highlight.
