Summary

The January Project is a fan‑made hack that stitches together a surprising amount of pre‑release and prototype material from Super Mario 64, then adds a layer of polish to make the experience feel both nostalgic and fresh. You get to wander through the long‑forgotten test stages that Nintendo’s developers once used in January 1996, each one packed with quirky geometry and hidden secrets that never made it to the final game. The hack also throws in a handful of oddball challenges, like racing against the mischievous Blargg, taking a spin on the icy Ice Motos, and hunting down the elusive Yellow Switch that unlocks extra content. On top of the new levels, classic but unused moves return – a squat kick, the SSK side‑flip, dashing, and the elusive JumpStep3 – giving Mario a richer move set that feels both retro and oddly satisfying. All of this combines into a love letter to the early development days of one of the N64’s most iconic titles.
