Superman: The New Superman Adventures – or simply Superman 64 – tried to bring the bright, kinetic world of the animated series to the Nintendo 64 in full 3‑D. The game drops you into a virtual‑reality Metropolis shrouded in a thick "Kryptonite fog" that is really just distance fog, a trick to hide the console’s limited draw distance. You control the Man of Steel across fourteen stages that swing between indoor puzzle‑filled arenas – where you hack computers, collect access codes and battle villains like Mala, Metallo, Darkseid and Brainiac – and outdoor flight segments that force you to zip through rings while rescuing civilians.

Superpowers such as heat vision, freeze breath or X‑ray sight are locked behind scattered power‑ups, and your health drains if you linger near Kryptonite or take hits. Three difficulty settings (Easy, Normal, Superman) control ring requirements and time limits, and clever mode‑switching lets you skip the most dreaded ring‑flying stages entirely. Up to four players can jump into a quirky multiplayer mode, either racing space‑pods or hurling weapons at each other.

Development was a two‑year slog plagued by licensing constraints, inexperienced programmers and constant technical headaches – even Nintendo had to step in near the end. Despite a strong launch that saw over half a million copies sold and a brief top‑ten NPD ranking, critics panned the game for its clunky controls, foggy visuals and relentless slowdown. Over the years it has earned a notorious reputation, even holding the Guinness World Record for the lowest‑rated superhero game.

Storyline

In Superman: The New Superman Adventures, Lex Luthor teams up with Brainiac to trap Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, and Professor Hamilton inside a virtual‑reality Metropolis. The villainous duo fills the simulated city with a "Kryptonite fog"—actually distance fog—to weaken the Man of Steel and forces him to complete a series of tasks and puzzles.

The game alternates between outdoor and indoor stages. Outdoor levels have Superman soaring through rings while rescuing civilians, whereas indoor sections require him to locate access cards, activate computers, and battle foes such as Brainiac, Mala, Metallo, Darkseid and Parasite.

Across fourteen levels, Superman must free the captured citizens, dismantle the artificial world Luthor created, and ultimately restore the real Metropolis.
