Summary
Superman: The New Superman Adventures—commonly called Superman 64—drops you into a virtual‑reality Metropolis that’s literally shrouded in distance fog, a cheap trick that masks the N64’s limited draw distance. You control the Man of Steel in a 3‑D platforming suite where flying, punching, and occasional power‑up‑granted abilities like heat vision or freeze breath feel heroic, but the controls are famously sluggish.
The game toggles between indoor missions filled with puzzles, locked codes, and battles against the likes of Malak, Metallo, Darkseid and Brainiac, and outdoor “ride” stages that force you through ring‑to‑ring flight courses. Three difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Superman) let you skip many of those rings, yet the time limits still tighten as you progress. Up to four players can hop into quirky multiplayer—racing a spaceship while shooting rings or tossing weapons in a chaotic battle arena.
Development was a nightmare, with Titus hampered by licensing restrictions and inexperienced staff; the technical director even dubbed the process “a disaster from start to finish.” Despite that, it sold over 500,000 copies and cracked the N64 top‑ten in June 1999. Critics panned it for fog, frame‑rate drops, bad AI and clunky collision, cementing its legacy as one of the most infamous, Guinness‑record‑holding superhero flops.
Storyline
In Superman: The New Superman Adventures, Lex Luthor teams up with Brainiac to trap Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, and Professor Hamilton inside a virtual‑reality Metropolis. The simulated city is riddled with "Kryptonite fog" that actually works as distance fog, limiting Superman’s powers and forcing him to rely on skill and strategy.
The game alternates between outdoor ring‑flying stages, where Superman swoops through floating rings while rescuing civilians, and indoor puzzle levels that require finding access cards, activating computers, and battling foes. Villains such as Brainiac, Mala, Metallo, Darkseid and Parasite appear throughout the fourteen levels, each presenting a unique challenge.
Ultimately, Superman must free the hostages, dismantle Luthor’s virtual world, and restore the real Metropolis, proving that even in a digital nightmare the Man of Steel can prevail.
