Summary
Superman 64, officially titled *Superman: The New Superman Adventures*, tried to give players the feeling of actually being the Man of Steel, but the final product feels more like a lesson in patience. The game alternates between outdoor “ring‑fly” sections, where you must zip through floating hoops while rescuing civilians, and indoor stages that demand you hunt for access cards, hack computers and battle villains like Brainiac, Metallo and Darkseid. Most of Superman’s iconic powers—heat vision, freeze breath, X‑ray vision—only appear as limited power‑ups, and the core abilities of flight and super‑strength are hampered by clunky, unresponsive controls and a thick veil of distance fog that obscures everything beyond a few meters.
Development was a two‑year nightmare: Titus wrestled with Warner Bros. and DC over licensing, endured endless character approvals and saw its original open‑world vision stripped down to less than ten percent of the plan. Even Nintendo’s late‑stage technical support couldn’t fix the collision bugs that make even simple jumps feel like guesswork.
The game offers three difficulty settings, a hidden way to skip the infamous ring stages, and two multiplayer modes—a chaotic battle arena and a spaceship‑racing gauntlet—but none of these extras mask the repetitive, time‑pressured missions that earned the title a reputation as one of the worst games ever made.
Storyline
In Superman 64, Lex Luthor teams up with Brainiac to trap Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane and Professor Hamilton inside a virtual‑reality version of Metropolis. The simulated city is shrouded in Kryptonite fog, a deliberate ploy to sap Superman’s powers as he works to free the hostages and dismantle the digital world. In the single‑player campaign the player assumes the role of Superman, who must complete a series of tasks and puzzles set by Luthor. Indoor stages pit the Man of Steel against a roster of foes including Mala, Metallo, Darkseid and Brainiac, the latter responsible for programming the virtual environment.
The game’s premise centers on Lex’s stunt to deceive the citizens of the “fair city,” with Lois and Jimmy being the first victims. Using his full range of abilities, Superman fights through the artificial Metropolis, ultimately confronting Lex’s mission and rescuing the trapped allies.
