Summary
Super Robot Spirits is a 2.5‑D fighting title for the Nintendo 64 that drops mecha from several classic anime onto a flat battlefield. While the models and stages are rendered in 3‑D, the combat runs on a simple left‑right plane and each robot can punch, kick, block and wield weapons such as turret guns or energy swords. Defeating an opponent feeds an orange “spirit” gauge; filling it lets you launch a character‑specific super attack that bypasses blocking. Hidden conditions unlock special units like Master Gundam, Devil Gundam and the Judecca from the Super Robot Wars Alpha series. The mode is presented as a string of episodic encounters, mimicking an anime episode each time. Critical response was lukewarm at best—famously low sales of about 9,000 copies and scores ranging from 58 % to 72 % reflected the view that the graphics were uneven and the move‑list meagre. Reviewers praised the stylish opening and the game’s story mode and multiplayer, yet they lamented stiff animations and a lack of depth in the fighting system. Some outlets even called it a rushed prototype, while a lone source claimed the engine was the best on the N64. Regardless, the title remains a niche curiosity for fans of Japanese robot anime.
Storyline
Super Robot Spirits throws players into a galaxy‑wide conflict between humanity and a relentless fleet of alien machines called the Aerogater. The Aerogater have been tearing across star systems, leaving destruction in their wake. When they set their sights on Earth, the planet’s defenses are quickly overwhelmed.
To turn the tide, a mysterious portal opens, pulling in powerful mecha pilots and their robots from alternate dimensions. These dimensional guardians rally together, battling the Aerogater across iconic Earth locales to finally halt the invasion. The fate of the world rests on their combined strength and the player's skill.
