Summary

Starshot: Space Circus Fever (often just called Starshot) landed on the Nintendo 64 and later on Windows, proudly one of the few N64 titles that supported native 16:9 widescreen. The game finally slipped onto U.S. shelves at the end of June 1999, after a brief postponement from its original April window.

What really grabs me is the level of freedom the protagonist enjoys – you can walk, run, talk, jump, swim, and even fly while hurling controllable stars at bewildered foes. Over 300 “cosmical” characters from diverse planets bounce through a vividly rendered 3D space‑circus, making every area feel populated and strange. The graphics were surprisingly rich for the era, and the soundtrack blends circus motifs with a sci‑fi flair.

Critically, the game split opinion; review aggregators show a mixed reception, with praise for its ambition and wobbling scores for uneven execution. Still, for anyone hunting a forgotten gem of ’90s 3D platforming, Starshot offers a quirky, atmospheric ride worth revisiting.

Storyline

Starshot: Space Circus Fever puts you in the shoes of Starshot, the star‑juggler of the beleaguered Space Circus led by the charismatic Starcash. After forcing the rival Virtua Circus off a planet, the circus receives an ultimatum from the Intergalactic Bank: repay the loan in ten days or face annihilation.

Desperate, Starshot is dispatched to a weapons‑expo world to steal a detection device that can locate new attractions. The gadget whisks him across four distant planets where he rescues the ghost dog Laika, the last Earthling, and a faulty machine, while a mysterious bird he seeks is slain by Virtua Circus.

Using the earnings from these new acts, the circus pays off the bank—only to learn the representative was a Virtua Circus robot in disguise. Wolfgang von Ravel, the ruthless director of Virtua Circus, launches an assault on the Space Circus ship. Starshot defeats Wolfgang, begs Starcash for mercy, and is spared, but Wolfgang captures him, leaving Starshot imprisoned in a cell as the enemy ship drifts aimlessly through space.
