Summary

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron dropped me into Luke Skywalker’s cockpit, and I was thrust from one extreme locale to another—flying over oceans, soaring through canyons, blasting across deserts, and skimming volcanic fields. The game let me pilot a roster that spanned sleek X‑wings and daring A‑wings to clunky snowspeeders, each with distinct armaments and handling quirks. Real‑time lighting bathed every ship in engine glow, explosions, smoke, and tracer fire, while the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak unlocked a crisp 640 × 480 resolution that made the star‑filled backdrops feel surprisingly vivid.

The mission system split into search‑and‑destroy, reconnaissance, rescue, and protect categories, rewarding precision with bronze, silver and gold medals that raised my rank and unlocked hidden content. Earning every medal unlocked the secret three bonus levels—Beggar’s Canyon, the Death Star trench run, and the Battle of Hoth—and extra craft such as the Millennium Falcon, a T‑16 Skyhopper, and even a 1969 Buick Electra Easter egg. Behind the scenes, Factor 5’s custom audio engine filled the skies with over 80 minutes of Dolby Pro Logic surround sound, a technical feat that helped the game pull an 85 % aggregate score and cross a million U.S. sales, earning it a spot in Nintendo’s Player’s Choice lineup.

Storyline

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron begins six months after the Battle of Yavin, when Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles quickly assemble a twelve‑pilot elite called Rogue Squadron to halt the Empire’s renewed onslaught.

The early missions send the squad to Mos Eisley, then to escort and rescue on Barkhesh and Chorax. They later aid Han Solo and Chewbacca in Millennium Falcon to extract defector Crix Madine from Corellia, after which Gold Squadron’s Y‑wings join them on Gerrard V to confront 128th TIE Interceptor Squadron and secure defection of Kasan Moor.

Moor’s intelligence drives three successive strikes on Imperial bases, culminating in Wedge’s capture on Kessel and a daring rescue of him and other prisoners by the remaining pilots. The squad then battles Moff Kohl Seerdon, launching hit‑and‑run raids on Taloraan and Fest, a volcanic base on Sullust, and a hostage city on Chandrila before seizing Thyferra, killing Seerdon and freeing the bacta‑rich world.

The final chapter jumps six years after the Battle of Endor, when the New Republic controls most of the galaxy and Wedge now commands Rogue Squadron. On Mon Calamari the Imperial World Devastators are destroying the planet, but the squad disables all three machines and eliminates the remaining Imperial forces, securing the Republic’s victory.
