Summary
Spider-Man for the Nintendo 64 was the first true 3D outing for the web‑slinger, borrowing character designs from the animated series and even featuring a few of the original voice actors. The N64 port swaps the PlayStation’s pre‑rendered movies for captioned freeze‑frames that look like comic panels, a clever workaround for the console’s cutscene limits. A hidden sound test, reachable via a cheat code, lets you listen to every individual music sample.
Gameplay revolves around swinging, wall‑crawling and short‑range zip lines, while a limited stock of web‑cartridges lets you stun, trap or blast enemies. Power‑ups such as Spider‑Armor boost strength and defense, and Fire Webbing proves especially useful against symbiote foes.
Scattered comic book covers unlock in‑game artwork, and a roster of alternate costumes each tweaks Spider‑Man’s stats – the 2099 suit adds raw power, the civilian Peter Parker outfit cuts web‑cartridges to two, and the Ben Reilly outfit makes no changes at all.
Many stages open with a brief narration from series co‑creator Stan Lee, adding a nostalgic comic‑book feel. The game also rewards exploration with hidden comics and a quirky controller‑pak save system.
Critically, the N64 version earned an 82.52% aggregate on GameRankings and a 72 on Metacritic, reflecting solid praise for its ambitious presentation despite the hardware’s constraints.
Storyline
Spider-Man for the Nintendo 64 opens with a reformed Dr. Otto Octavius demonstrating a new invention at the Science Expo 2000. An impostor Spider‑Man crashes the demo, steals the device and frames the real Peter Parker, sparking a city‑wide manhunt. While trying to clear his name, Spider‑Man teams up with Black Cat, battles Rhino at a power plant, and rescues J. Jonah Jameson from Scorpion.
The plot thickens when Venom kidnaps Mary Jane to lure Spider‑Man, leading to a chase through the streets and sewers. After freeing Mary Jane, Venom reluctantly helps Spider‑Man investigate the Daily Bugle’s files, where they discover a hidden Symbiote infestation and confront the impostor – revealed to be Mysterio in disguise.
Following clues to Warehouse 65, Spider‑Man uncovers an undersea base producing Symbiotes and finds Black Cat imprisoned. The true villains emerge: Dr. Octavius, who faked his reform, and Carnage, who supplies a cloned symbiote. A showdown pits Spider‑Man against Doctor Octopus, Venom against Carnage, and finally Spider‑Man defeats the combined threat by trapping Carnage in a sonic bubble.
The base self‑destructs, the Carnage symbiote separates from Octavius, and the heroes are rescued by Captain America, Black Cat and Venom. The game ends with Spider‑Man playing cards with Captain America, Daredevil and the Punisher, while Black Cat and the Human Torch dance.
